The use
of Prilosec (omeprazole) in conjunction with calcium carbonate
decreases calcium absorption in women over age 65, putting
them at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis, according
to researchers at the University of Minnesota.
Prilosec,
used to treat acid reflux disease, is a proton pump inhibitor
that suppresses the backflow of acids from the stomach to
the esophagus. However, the body cannot absorb calcium unless
an acidic medium in present.
Out of
18 females, all over age 65 and taking Prilosec, 16 had decreased
calcium absorption levels, according to the study presented
at the annual meeting of the American Geriatrics Society.
Researchers
stress that further studies are needed to see if higher calcium
doses, food intake and other factors also affect a woman's
calcium absorption when taking Prilosec.
