California
researchers report that diabetic women who take hormone replacement
therapy (HRT) after menopause appear to be better able to
keep their blood sugar levels under control.
The researchers,
who reviewed records of more than 15,000 women with type 2
diabetes and a mean age of 64.7 years, noted that for women
with diabetes, "the changes that accompany menopause
may further diminish glycemic control."
They reported
in Diabetes Care blood sugar levels of the 25 percent of the
women whose records they reviewed who were taking HRT were
"significantly lower . . . than in women not using HRT."
The researchers
suggested that clinical trials be organized to "understand
whether HRT may improve glycemic control in women with diabetes."
