Testing
has begun on a instrument designed to facilitate a knee replacement
technique that is less invasive than a total knee replacement.
Stryker
Corporation has begun clinical evaluations of the Howmedica
Osteonics Scorpio® Total Knee instrumentation, developed
to complement the surgical technique pioneered by Dr. Peter
Bonutti and used in a less invasive knee replacement procedure.
The Bonutti
technique reduces the length of the incision by 70 percent
compared to traditional total knee replacement. Using new
positioning and minimized tissue exposure, the Bonutti technique
allows the surgeon to access the joint with less trauma resulting
in faster rehabilitation, reduced pain and better function.
Bonutti
has performed over 100 of the procedures. The multi-center
study, led by Bonutti, is designed to validate the results
and benefits of the procedure.
