A synthetic
cartilage is now available in Europe that may be an option
for patients requiring a total joint replacement.
SaluMedica's
has been given authorization to market SaluCartilage
in Europe for cartilage repair. SaluCartilage is not yet available
in the United States.
SaluCartilage
has been developed for use as a less invasive and more cost-effective
alternative to current therapies for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid
arthritis and sports injury.
SaluCartilage
is a purely synthetic implant made from the Company's proprietary
Salubria biomaterial and is offered in several sizes.
Using
standard arthroscopic techniques and instruments, damaged
cartilage can be cored out and replaced with SaluCartilage
to give a load-bearing joint surface.
"One
of the greatest benefits of the SaluCartilage implantation
is that it does not necessitate the sacrifice of healthy cartilage
from the patient, although it could be used in conjunction
with such a technique," said Dr. David N. Ku, present
and CEO of SaluMedica. "Even more importantly, we expect
that SaluCartilage could provide an option to those patients
requiring a total joint replacement, postponing the need for
this traumatic surgery."
