Vitamin
E, an antioxidant, combined with other vitamins and minerals
lowers the risk of macular degeneration, according to a new
report from the Mayo Clinic.
"Mayo
Clinic on Vision and Eye Health," details a recent study
called The Age-Related Eye Disease Study which showed the
impact of dietary supplements on people at a high risk of
developing the advanced stages of macular degeneration.
Participants
in the study were able to lower their risk of developing macular
degeneration by 25 percent and lower their risk of vision
loss due to the disease by 19 percent. The reduction in risk
was due to a combination of vitamin E with other vitamins
and minerals, according to the Mayo researchers.
"Here
is positive proof of the role dietary supplements can play
in preserving your eyesight," said the book's authors.
"Your
body -- and your eyes -- use antioxidants to combat free radicals
when too many are in your bloodstream," said the researchers.
Free radicals damage normal cells, a process thought to cause
cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma.
