2 Glucose Test Meters Combined With Handspring PDAs Approved by FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared for marketing two glucose test meters that are used with personal digital assistants (PDAs).

The meters allow diabetes patients to more easily track and manage their blood sugar levels using computer technology.

The FreeStyle Tracker Diabetes Management System, made by TheraSense , Inc. and the Accu-Check Advantage Module, made by Roche Diagnostics Corp. each has two components with associated software. The systems integrate parts of the currently marketed glucose meters and test strips with a Handspring Visor PDA.

To use the meters, the patient inserts a glucose meter module into the hand-held PDA. The patient then inserts a test strip into the meter, collects a blood sample, and places it on the test strip. The PDA reads the glucose level, displays the results and stores the information on a database. The test results can be uploaded onto a personal computer.

Also, the new systems allow patients to track other health data including insulin usage, food intake, exercise and medications.
