Atrix
Laboratories will launch a large study to determine whether
its localized antibiotic treatment for periodontal disease
known as Atridox can protect against a second heart attack
or other major coronary event.
At the
International Association of Dental Research meeting in March
2002, periodontal treatment using Atridox was shown in a small
study of 100 participants to lower two important inflammatory
markers associated with heart disease as well as lowering
bacteria in the blood.
Starting
in September, this new three-year multi-center study will
enroll 875 adult patients with periodontal disease and a history
of heart disease. One group of patients will receive aggressive
periodontal treatment including Atridox, while others will
receive standard gum therapy.
Patients
will be monitored over a period of years to determine if treating
periodontal infection will reduce the occurrence of a second
heart attack or a heart event.
Researchers
linked periodonatal disease as a risk factor for cardiovascular
disease in a study reported May 8th at the World Congress
of Cardiology meeting in Sydney, Australia.
