The symptoms
of overactive bladder can be severe enough to significantly
affect the sex lives and intimacy of many people who have
the condition, according to a recent Decima Research poll
conducted in Canada.
Faced
with the prospect of engaging in an intimate situation, a
person with an overactive bladder may become apprehensive
and even withdraw completely.
According
to the poll, more than 50 percent of patients who cope with
the chronic symptoms of overactive bladder report the condition
negatively affects their enjoyment and frequency of sexual
relations. One-fifth of the respondents say their symptoms
are the reason, and a similar number report they are not in
a relationship because of the condition.
"Overactive
bladder can severely affect the emotional well-being of patients,"
said Dr. Sidney Radomski, a Toronto urologist. "Embarrassment,
along with the fear of having a wetting accident, often causes
people to withdraw from any type of closeness, including sex
and intimacy."
