Arthritis and Pain News:

Humira Labels Carry New Warnings of Slight Chance of Allergic Reactions and Blood Disorders

The label of Abbott Laboratories’ rheumatoid arthritis drug Humira® (adalimumab) will carry some new warnings, the company announced November 5 in a letter to healthcare professionals.

In rare cases, Abbott said Humira users can develop serious allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis and blood disorders such as cytopenia and aplastic anemia.

Abbott said allergic reactions have occurred in about 1% of patients, while reports of blood disorders have been rare.

Abbott said users should seek medical treatment if any of these side effects occur and consider discontinuing Humira.

Abbott also warned that the use of Humira and another arthritis drug known as anakinra, which is marketed under the brand name of Kineret by Amgen Inc., is not recommended as the combination can cause serious infections.
