The damaging
effects of aspirin on the stomach lining are further aggrevated
in the presence of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, another
cause of ulcers, according to researchers from the Kyoto Prefectural
University of Medicine in Japan.
Researchers
used gerbils to see how aspirin and H. pylori interact with
each other in causing damage to the stomach lining. They gave
aspirin to gerbils infected with H. pylori and also to uninfected
gerbils.
The infected
gerbils had more widespread areas of tissue erosion and bleeding
than the gerbils that were not infected, according to the
study published in the journal Gut.
Researchers
concluded that infection with H. pylori worsens aspirin-caused
ulcers.
