Patients
with gastroesophogeal reflux disease (GERD) have a higher
incidence of irritable bowel syndrome, according to researchers
at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the University of California
in Los Angeles.
A total
of 200 patients were evaluated separately by two physicians
who were unaware of the patients' medical histories. The physicians
were asked to identify which patients had GERD.
Participants
in the study were later given a follow-up questionnaire which
asked questions related to irritable bowel syndrome. The presence
of irritable bowel syndrome was then compared between GERD
and non-GERD patients. An additional test for irritable bowel
syndrome was also administered to confirm results.
Based
on their findings published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology,
researchers report there was a higher incidence of irritable
bowel syndrome in the study participants with GERD compared
with those without GERD.
