Seniors without drug insurance who have been given a prescription for Merck's highly regarded new diabetes pill Januvia will find they can buy it at lowest price at MyFloridaPharmacy.com, according to a survey of pharmacies by Senior Health Report.
A normal month’s supply of 30 pills of either the 50 mg or 100 mg dosage of Januvia (sitagliptin) are now available for $159.99 from MyFlorida Pharmacy.com, according to Managing Director Milton R. Benjamin.
The usual Januvia dose is 100 mg daily, but patients with renal impairment may require either a 50 mg or 25 mg dose. MyFloridaPharmacy.com is selling the lower doses at $159.99 as well.
Senior Health Report said that in its price survey conducted in Florida, the 100 mg dose of Januvia was $182.99 at CVS, $180.49 at Target, $179.68 at Wal-Mart, and $166.99 at Walgreen's.
"While we recognize that Januvia is an expensive drug, many doctors seem to be prescribing Januvia for type 2 diabetic patients, and MyFloridaPharmacy.com’s price for Januvia is about $20 lower than the prices at Wal-Mart, Target and CVS," a Senior Health Report spokesperson said.
While Januvia, first of a new class of medicines called DPP-4 inhibitors that work by enhancing the body's own ability to lower blood sugar, was only approved by the FDA a few weeks ago, endocrinologists already are reportedly recommending it to more than 20 percent of type 2 diabetics.
In clinical trials, many type 2 diabetics treated with Januvia saw significant reductions in their HbA1c -- a measure of glucose control -- with no significant adverse effects and no change in body weight.
